Called to Honor Governing Authorities

by M.T. Michalak

Ever since word came out that President Obama was coming to West Wilkes High, Facebook has exploded about it, and I've been shocked (and disgusted) to read what many of my fellow believers are posting. The sarcasm, insults, crude jokes, eye-rolls, and rude remarks have been everywhere, and I think that as believers, we all ought to feel ashamed. We have eleven, thirteen, fifteen year old kids posting comments about how Obama's crazy to come here, how he's liable to get shot here in Wilkes, how it's stupid that he's coming, how they couldn't care less, etc. I can't believe the stuff that is coming out of our youth's mouths, but after reading some parents' posts, it's easy to see where they are getting it. And I'm appalled!

Have we considered the fact that maybe GOD placed our leaders, including our president, over us for a REASON? We don't have to obey them if they ask us to go against our faith, but otherwise, we are called to above the petty criticism, badmouthing, complaining, and insulting. If we're not above that, then I think WE are the ones in error, because we are told, by God, to give our political leaders our RESPECT. Frankly, after reading some of my fellow believers' posts, I think we ought to be ashamed. Just saying.

Romans 13:1 says, " Let every person be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. Therefore he who resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves."

Regardless of what our leaders are doing wrong, we are in just as great (if not greater) error if we can't give them our prayers and respect. And, in my opinion, if we're too busy making crude comments about our leaders to pray for them, then we're also partially responsible for the downfalls in our country, because we aren't doing our job as followers of Christ.

1 Peter 2:13 says, "Therefore submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake, whether to the king or the supreme, or to governors. For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men. Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king." It doesn't matter what the political party is, if the leader is wrong or right, or if the leader is the person we wanted. We are specifically told to honor all political authority, in every way we can, and we are told to do it as unto the Lord.

I think we ought to repent, as a body, for the way we've treated someone God has allowed to rule our nation, and instead of acting like the world, we should start praying for wisdom, courage, and revelation for him, and blessing him as the president of our country.
